A case of Alopecia Areata


Here we present a case of alopecia areata, treated under the supervision of Dr.R.Gnanasambandam, renowned physician and academician. Here he illustrated the understanding of miasm in chronic cases with recurrence. He can be contacted at 6, Llyod's II Lane Royapettah, Chennai -600014


      A female aged 20 years presented with patchy hair loss over the scalp. Initially coin sized lesions appareled and later matted together to form large bald areas, almost she developed total hair loss. Dandruff, grayish greasy with itching intensively. The scalp is shiny withered without any feeble hair growth. Initially she took allopathic treatment and then preferred Homoeopathic treatment. She was recovered to some extent and skipped the treatment . After seven years she had the same complaints and presented the complaints as follows

• Patchy hair loss over parietal, occipital and temporal areas
• Itching < night
• Sneezing < morning
• Gain in weight after delivery

Past History

     She had primary complex in childhood, treated with modern medication
     Had been immunized for all complaints
     H/o Cold and Cough, fever at yearly intervals treated with her family doctor
     H/o Tonsillitis

Family History

     Diabetic paternal father. Hypertensive mother

Appetite - Normal
Thirst - Normal
Stool - Normal
Urine - Normal
Sweat – Armpits
Body reaction - Hot
Bath - Hot water
Sleep - Normal
Desire -Sweets
Food Type - Non Vegetarian, Has the habits of tea

Mental general

     Mental, intellectual state of mind is very calm, depressed easily

Menstrual history

     Menstruating, Periods are regular, 3-4 days flow, no pain

Obstetric History

     Married , delivered a male child under C.S


     Blood parameters were normal

Evaluation of Symptoms

     Fair and flabbiness, Obesity after delivery
     Recurrent Patchy hair loss
     Scalp Itching < night
     Tendency to catch cold
     Sneezing < morning
     Immunised for communicable disease
     Familial Diabetes Mellitus and Hypertension
     Sweats profusely in armpits
     Desires for sweets
     Non Vegetarian

First Prescription                     19/11/02

• R/x Phos 200 tds / one day
• Placebo for 14 days
• Acid Phos Q 5 drops tds with water
• Advised Cochlearia Armoracia Q for External application with coconut Oil

Follow Ups


        Initially Phosphorus was prescribed on totality and constitution. When the complaints recurred the selected drug Acid Flour was prescribed immediately. Sulphur was prescribed as an antipsoric which was not done earlier then the Anti syphilitic drug Acid flour was prescribed. Cochlearia Armoracia Q externally used as an auxiliary treatment
