Migraine is a syndrome of episodic recurrent attacks of unilateral headaches. Migraine headaches may occur with or without a prodrome. The aura of a migraine may consist of neurologic symptoms, such as dizziness, tinnitus, scotomas, photophobia, or visual scintillations.

The word "migraine" is French in origin and comes from the Greek language "hemicrania",as does the Old English term "megrim". Literally, "hemicrania"which means only half the head.A retaeus of Cappadocia is credited as discoverer of migraine and Galenus of Pergamon used the word hemicranias.

The history of mans suffering from headache back to9000 years ago when basic drastic therapy of that time was trepanation. Headache with neuralgia was recorded in the medical documents of the ancient Egyptians as early as 1200 BC.

In 400BC Hippocrates described the visual aura that can precede the migraine headache, and the relief that can be induced by vomiting. Aretaeus of Cappadocia is credited as the discoverer of migraine because of his classic description of the symptoms of a unilateral headache associated with vomiting and with headache free intervals in between attacks in the 2nd century.

Galenus of Pergamon used the term Hemicrania from which the word migraine was derived. He thought there was a connection between the stomach and the brain because of the nausea and vomiting that often accompany an attack. For relief of migraine,Spanish-born physician Abulcasis, also known as Abu E1 Quasim. Suggested application of a hot iron to the head or insertion of garlic into an incision made in the temple.

In the Medieval Ages migraine was recognized as a discrete medical disorder with tretment ranging from hot irons to blood letting and even witchcraft.Followers of Galenus explained migraine is caused by aggressive yellow bile.

Ebn sina(Avicenna) described migraine in his textbook as …small movements, drinking and eating ,and sounds provoke the pain… the patient cannot tolerate the sound of speaking and light. He would like to rest in darkness alone.

Abu Bakr Mohamed Ibn Zakariya Razi noted the association of headache with different events in the lives of women…And such a headache may be observed after delivery and abortion or during menopause and dysmenorrhea.

International Headache Society (IHS) redefined and classified headaches to formulate the current categorization. The headache previously described as classic migraine is now known as migraine with aura, and that described as common migraine is now termed migraine without aura. Migraines without aura are the most common, accounting for more than 80% of all migraines.
