The Organon of Medicine of Dr. Hahnemann went through different editions from 1810-1843. Each edition had to admit something new or reject something not feasible to the natural law.

Even Dr. Hahnemann himself started with low potencies such as 30c. He slowly and steadily built up the potencies as experience taught and guided him towards “ rapid gentle and permanent cure “.

In the 4th edition he introduced the use of a single dose of 1 poppy seed globule of the remedy but warned against the repetition of the same remedy as long as the 1st dose improved the symptoms. This is called “WAIT AND WATCH METHOD” (Aphorism 242-245).

In 1833 he published his 5th Edition of Organon. This edition was also termed as “LIMIT BREAKER”. On the advice of his 1st disciples Drs. Gross & Stapf he supported the use of high potencies higher than his earlier limit of 30c.
Another of his disciple Julius Caspar Jenichen a layman of tremendous physical strength experimented with high potencies. He wrote about Arsenicum 8000c, which was made by the faithful power of his arm and executed by 165000 strong strokes.

He communicated this to Von Boenninghausen who had confidence in Jenichen’s potencies, as Von knew the unusual strength and perseverance required to make them according to the Master’s strict instructions. He concluded that many years would be required to fully confirm Jenichen’s potencies. In the 5th edition Hahnemann effected 3 important changes,

The use of potencies higher than 30c.

  • The use of potencies higher than 30c
  • Repetition of doses in shorter intervals to speed up healing
  • Administration of remedy in water

In the footnote to 246 of the 6th edition Hahnemann says “What I said….In the 5th edition ….was all that my experience allowed me to say at that time. It was written with a purpose of preventing these adverse reactions of the life principle. However during the last 4 or 5 years all such difficulties have been fully lifted through the modifications I have made since then resulting in my perfect procedure (for LM potency medicines). The same well chosen medicine can now be given daily even for months when necessary. This LM potency Pierre Schmidt terms as “FORGOTTEN TREASURE” of the 6th edition.
The 6th edition though written by Hahnemann was not published until 1920.

In 1834 Hahnemann chanced to meet a French lady Madam Marie Melanie d’Herville-Gohier who later became his wife. Both came back to France and there he completed his “most complete and best method” described in the 6th edition of organon. He died in 1843 and his manuscript was with Hahnemann’s publisher. The manuscript remained hidden in an attic in Germany and was not discovered until after the 1st World War. It was finally published in 1920 with the 1st English edition appearing in 1921(translated by William Boericke).

    Harimon Choudhury

The guidelines of the 6th edition were not truly put into practice until 1950 by Dr. Charles Pahud of France and then by the famous homoeopath Dr. Pierre Schmidt of Geneva in 1954 who says in his “HIDDEN TREASURES OF 6TH EDITION OF ORGANON”. The main points which I wish to raise here are either entirely new and somewhat revolutionary when compared with accepted notions divulged and applied in the 5 earlier editions of Organon or points already stated but redrafted and reexamined. They are as a rule barely known or not known at all by homoeopaths.

The aggravation after high potency can be so acute that it leads the patient in the hospital (in case of Asthma) or the aggravation can be long lasting (upto several months or more). Either way the patient is likely to give up homoeopathy forever.

The LM potencies are as gentle as the low potencies and are as powerful as highest centesimal. The remedy action penetrates very deep and any aggravation wears off quickly usually in less than 24 hours.
The Choudhry family began using LM s in India in 1957. LM s were not introduced in America until recently because Homoeopathy in this country is dominated by the legacy of Kent who unfortunately never knew of LMs because he died 5 years before the 6th edition was published.
