I’m convert to homoeopathy, says minister

LONDON,OctOBER13: The Welsh secretary, Peter Hain, yesterday became the first cabinet minister to advocate openly for more complementary therapy within the NHS. Mr. Hain revealed to a gathering of GPs who integrate complementary and conventional medicine in their practice that he had become a “true convert” after using homoeopathy on his first baby, Sam, who suffered from eczema and asthma.

“Various creams were prescribed and a steroidal spray. But they didn’t work,” he said at the meeting, organised by the Prince of Wales Foundation for Integrated Health. “So instead we turned to the complementary medicine. And with the help of homoeopathy and tight restrictions on the sort of food that our son could eat, both ailments went away.”

Mr. Hain’s backing for homoeopathy comes just weeks after the Lancet medical journal said it was no better than a placebo and its editor called for guidelines to stop “inappropriate practice” among NHS doctors who use it.

The Lancet said homoeopathic solutions were so dilute that sometimes not a single molecule of the active ingredient remains. The Prince of Wales, who spoke later to the gathering of around 120 GPs who have agreed to affiliate themselves to the foundation, said he was delighted that more than half of all GPs are now offering some sort of complementary therapy.

He added: “I can’t tell you how pleased and proud I am that so many eminent and sensible quacks are joining with my foundation and it is my fervent belief that as more and more GPs spread the word of integrated healthcare.”

Governor bans new ISM Colleges

T. N .Chaturvedi

BANGALORE: In a major setback to the Karnataka government, Governor T N Chaturvedi, who is also chancellor of universities, has banned new colleges- Ayurveda, Homoeopathy, Nursing, Yoga, Pharmacy and all other Indian Systems of Medicine.

This is the first time that the Governor has intervened and imposed a ban. The move follows the deteriorating state of medical education and mushrooming of medical colleges which is in gross violation of rules. An upset His Excellency has noted in his communication to the state government: “Many fake institutions without any credentials have been given affiliation and are indulging in cheating students and parents thereby bringing disrepute to the government and the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences.” What has shocked the government is the governor’s dictum on a complete ban on starting new institutions. “He has directed the government to constitute a task force, which will study functioning of the 1,238-odd colleges. Until government formulates a policy ,no new colleges, courses or increase in intake can be entertained,” sources told The Times of India.

Drugs controller under consideration : Minister

K.K.Ramachandran

KOZHIKODE: Health Minister K K Ramachandran has said that the government was considering the demand for appointing a drugs controller wing for homoeopathic system of medicine in the state. Ramachandran was inaugurating the international scientific seminar organised jointly by Organisation of Government Homoeo Medical Officers Kerala (OGHMOK) and district committee of Institution of Homoeopaths Kerala (IHK) here.

The appointment of a separate drugs controller wing for homoeopathic medical system was a long pending demand from various quarters so as to ensure quality.

The minister assured the organisers that steps would be taken to ensure the passing of the Kerala Medical Practitioners Bill soon. The draft of the Bill is under discussion now. The Bill when passed will be useful in putting an end to the practice of homoeopathic treatment resorted to by unqualified persons, who are now ‘practising scot-free’ due to lack of law. The minister observed that there were ‘ego clashes’ between the different systems of medical treatment. “This should be avoided. Homoeopathy has a large number of preventive medicines. Though allopathic practitioners objected to administering of homoeopathic medicines to control jaundice recently in Kottayam, the government allowed the distribution of medicines and it was finally found to be successful in preventing jaundice,” the minister said. P Gopinath, president, OGHMOK, presided. S Premprakash, chairman, organising committee, also spoke. Later, Education Minister E T Mohammed Basheer inaugurated the State convention of OGHMOK. The Minister said that the new curriculum was aimed at lessening the burden of students. S G Biju, president, IHK, K Prabhakaran, DO (Homoeo), Kozhikode, P D Sumesh, State vice-president, IHK and C J Thilak, district president, IHK, also spoke.
