Birth place of Homoeopathy...Torgau

Homoeo times had an opportunity to visit the birthplace of Homoeopathy…Torgau, after visiting the birthplace of Dr.Hahnemann Meissen in Germany. Torgau is located similarly on the river Elbe, very adjutant to Oschatz where Dr Constaine Hering born.

Our troop traveled in two double Decker bus and reached the House number 3 Pfarrstrasse (Parish Lane) located at the end of the street.

Dr.Sameul Hahnemann has moved at least 24 times in the course of 88 years. Even though Dr.Hahnemann inspired with the spirit of Homoeopathy in 1790, the Discovery of Homoeopathy is listed only after application in Hufelands Journal in 1796. The real work started when living in Torgau between 1805-1811. In theses years Hahnemann alternated between writing, translating and performed medical duties besides his great goal to set medicine on a rational footing.

A chart in the house displayed “In 1805, the founder of Homoeopathy Samuel Hahnemann purchased this house to live here with his wife and 8 children. Here he brought together all his knowledge and experience to write his main work,” Organon of the Healing Arts”.

In a letter Dr Hahnemann has described … a house with entrance way and Garden...his family were already quite well off due to an inheritance that his mother-in-law had left them. Thus, they could afford this still rather large and splendid house. The three-storied building stood erect with leaky roof, washing off some wall paintings, Partial renovation works were by the restorers and the house resembled the baroque style of Hahnemann's time.

The ground floor with kitchen and a vestibule leads to a stone spiral staircase, which leads to the upper storey, which even now is unusable. The first floor an entrance hall, Dr. Hahnemann's study room and laboratory are seen. The second floor, most likely his Bedroom, a large living room and another bedroom are seen. Behind the main house was a large garden, which was described by Hahnemann as vegetable garden was also seen.

In order to take over the restoration and redecoration, a group of practising homeopaths founded the Torgau International Homeopathic College Foundation, As a non-profit organization had taken much efforts to make this place suitable for homeopathic work and international exchange. They are about to rent the house, which still belongs to the municipality. Embarking on a campaign to secure subsidies and raise funds, they seek assistance upon our colleagues, the public, and local government.
