Homeopathy trial aims to cut drug side-effects

QUEENS LAND, JULY.24:A landmark trial of a natural treatment for osteoarthritis could provide relief to many sufferers who cannot use conventional medicines. Authorities believe around 15 per cent of Australians have the debilitating disease. Research coordinator Don Baker says some patients, who take the available medication, suffer from side effects like gastric bleeding, nausea , kidney and liver dysfunction. “I am getting lots of people coming through this study.” he said. “I would say the majority of them come in because they cannot tolerate the side-effects of their medications. “Mind you, I’m getting some who just refuse to take it because they are more interested in natural products.” Mr Baker says the natural therapy being tried is a first.

“There are some other natural therapy products out there, but this would be the first time we’ve been able to offer a homeopathic product,” he said. The trial is part of a joint study between Queensland and New South Wales researchers.

New zealand Health Minister considers public funding for alternative treatments

NEW ZEALAND,3.AUGUST.
Health Minister Annette King is considering a report, which says, safe and effective alternative treatments should be publicly funded. Ms. King said yesterday complementary and alternative medicine was already widely used, and a survey had shown that in 2002 one in four people visited an alternative health practitioner. She has received a report from the Ministerial Advisory Committee on Complementary and Alternative Health on alternative medicine and treatment, which took three years to complete.

“The committee considers treatments proven to be safe, efficacious and cost effective should be publicly funded, and it also suggests better research infrastructure is needed to maximise benefits available for this area of care,” Ms. King said. “I am now giving careful consideration to the committee’s advice and have asked the ministry to look at how the recommendations may be able to contribute to improving health outcomes.” Ms. King said the report also highlighted a need for more information on the safety and effectiveness of alternative treatments such as naturopathy, chiropractice, herbal medicine, acupuncture, osteopathy and homeopathy. “It is important that alternative treatment users can access unbiased and up to date information so they can make sound decisions about their health,” Ms. King said.
