Homoeopathy –Second largest system in the world |
|
NEW DELHI:AUG.4: Offering an insight into the
way Indians treat their ailments and the system of medicine
they opt for, a survey carried out by an independent research
agency shows that over half the country’s population
suffering from chronic ailments, first try out home remedies
before seeking medical aid, while a whopping 30 per cent
prefer to leave it unattended.
Warning that there is also a recurrent use of
self-medication and ignorance of proper treatment, which
could lead to severe consequences, this survey conducted
by AC Neilsen found that of the 26 per cent people who
resort to medical intervention, 47 per cent first visit
their family doctor or a general practitioner, 18 per
cent resort to conventional treatments and 34 per cent
visit a homoeopath if their ailment is chronic.
The research revealed that 62 per cent of the
current homoeopathy users never tried an allopath and
82 per cent of the homoeopathy users would not switch
to conventional treatments.
Indicating a growing “faith” in homoeopathy
the second largest system of medicine in the world which
is registering an annual growth of around 20-25 per cent
— the survey showed that this alternative form of
treatment was an option that several patients looked at
seriously.
The survey conducted in markets including Delhi,
Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad and Chandigarh was aimed at
“evaluating the patient’s psychographics by
finding out the need gaps in each segment of chronic ailments
and evaluate the perception levels among the people on
the difference between the conventional treatment and
homeopathy,” as the AC Neilsen research paper put
it.
The research highlighted that while people opt
for conventional medicine because it enjoyed top-of-mind
recall at 59 per cent and has immediate results (56 per
cent), patients choose homoeopathy because it is safe
(53 per cent) or it is recommended by friends and relatives
(50 per cent). Also, 20 per cent of the population who
have never tried an allopath would opt for it because
it provides quick relief.

Ayush Practitioners Prescribing Allopathic Medicines |
|
The matter regarding qualified practitioners
of Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy systems prescribing
allopathic medicines has been examined in depth by the
Hon’ble Supreme Court of India in Civil Appeal No.89
of 1987 Dr. Mukhtiar Chand & Others versus State of
Punjab & Others. Representations have been received
from time to time on this matter and accordingly Department
of AYUSH entrusted the study of the contemporary acts
on medical practice in the light of judgement of Hon’ble
Supreme Court in 1987 Dr. Mukhtiar Chand & Others
versus State of Punjab & Others and other similar
judgements. Drugs can be sold and supplied by a Pharmacist
or a Druggist only on a prescription of a Registered Medical
Practitioner and who can also store them for treatment
of patients.
According to Section 2 (ee) of the Drugs and
Cosmetics Rules, 1995, Registered Medical Practitioner
means a person –
- holding a qualification
granted by an authority specified or notified under
Section 3 of the Indian Medical Degrees Act, 1916 (7
of 1916), or specified in the Schedules to the Indian
Medical Council Act, 1956 (102 of 1956); or
- registered or eligible
for registration in a medical register of a State meant
for the registration of persons practicing the modern
scientific system of medicine (excluding the Homoeopathy
system of medicine); or
- registered in a
medical register (other than a register for the registration
of Homoeopathic practitioners) of a State, who although
not falling within sub-clause (i) or sub-clause (ii)
is declared by a general or special order made by the
State Government in this behalf as a person practicing
the modern scientific system of medicine for the purposes
of this Act.
Hon’ble Supreme Court upheld the validity
of Rule 2 (ee) (iii) as well as the notifications issued
by various State Governments thereunder allowing Ayurveda,
Siddha, Unani and Homoeopathy practitioners to prescribe
allopathic medicines.
In view of the above judgement, Ayurveda, Siddha,
Unani and Homoeopathy practitioners can prescribe allopathic
medicines under Rule 2 (ee) (iii) only in those States
where they are authorized to do so by a general or special
order made by the concerned State Government in that
regard. Practitioners of Indian Medicine holding the
degrees in integrated courses can also prescribe allopathic
medicines if any State act in the State in which they
are practicing recognizes their qualification as sufficient
for registration in the State Medical Register.
This information was given by the Minister
for Health & Family Welfare, Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss
in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha.

Sweet Pills for Asiatic Lion |
|
NEW DELHI:AUG.10: Ghaghas, an Asiatic lion, is
a medical miracle. Considered a ‘lost case’,
it has roared back to life with homeopathic treatment.
Ghaghas arrived in Delhi in October 2004. Captured
from the wild, he had adapted well to the zoo surroundings.
But on March 15, Ghaghas left his meal unfinished. The
keepers made a note of it and the zoo veterinary gave
him injections which continued for the next three days.
He refused to eat for all the three days. By
the next week, his appetite had fallen drastically and
he had started salivating. The drugs administered did
not seem to help him much and Ghaghas’ blood samples
were sent for tests. Though Ghaghas started eating in
a few days, he showed symptoms of limping on his hind
legs and was unable to stand properly.
Zoo authorities got in touch with the chief wildlife
warden, Gujarat, who in turn recommended them to Dr R
G Jani from Veterinary College in Anand. “After
seeing Ghaghas’ reports, Dr Jani recommended him
homeopathy medicine. The lion showed improvement within
two months and got back on all fours on August 3, almost
six months after he fell ill. He is weak from the illness
but has stabilised,” said Singh.
However, the zoo officials are worried about
their two-year-old lioness, Meera, who was born in captivity.
She has started showing the same symptoms as Ghaghas since
July 5. However, she has given up on eating completely
and is currently admitted at the zoo hospital and is being
administered intra-venous. The officials are worried about
her fate. “The problem with most animals is that
they show symptoms at the final stage which makes their
treatment very difficult,” said Singh.
